The Community Kitchen Program organized by the Mahogany HOA Volunteer Community Support Committee for Mahogany residents is intended to save you hundreds of dollars a month by Meal planning. The cost of the program is $10/year for the Calgary Community Kitchen Non-Profit Registration. The cost per cook attending for each cooking session ( 24-30 dinners) is approximately $10 per person kitchen rental ( based on 25 cooks attending) and $2/ family member. So if you have a family of four you would pay $18 per cooking session plus the cost of food. All money is required to be paid prior to the food order ( Monday before the cooking session).

The cost of the balanced meals is about $1.50 to $1.75 per serving (large portions). Meals will be planned based on group preference. Allergies will be accounted for by meal trade offs for those with specific allergies. Vegetarian requirements will also be taken into account. The planning sessions and cooking sessions can have alternating attendance for spouses. Cooks will be trading volunteer childcare duties in 1 hour rotations which will give breaks from cooking. It is highly recommended that each participant has a slow cooker for preparing the meals once at home and sufficient space in their freezer.

Sunday afternoons have been selected for the cooking sessions (approx 5 hours) and free childcare supplied as outlined above.

Other than the original orientation meeting, the Community Kitchen meetings will all be by email communitysupport@mahoganyhoa.com.

The Mahogany Homeowners Association (HOA) Community Support Committee has started to arrange Play Date opportunities for parents and caregivers in Mahogany for the children.

Play Dates held July to August 31st, 2011 on Tuesdays from 10 am to 12 pm at the West Beach were a great success.  Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers and community and area sponsors for such exciting play dates over the summer months.

Red Cross Swim Lessons at the West Beach

The 2011 Canadian Red Cross Classes for Beginner and Red Cross swim levels 1 to 10 were well received by the HOA members and our instructor Chris Charney was a great hit with children.  We were asked by several adults this summer if the HOA would offer adult lessons next year.  If there is sufficient demand for childrens’ enrollment as well as youth and adults, the HOA would certainly consider setting up a variety of Red Cross level classes for all ages for the summer of 2012.

If you have an interest in youth or adult classes for next summer, please contact Linda Knight at lknight@mahoganyhoa.com or call 403.453.1221 prior to March 31, 2012 to express your interest as the HOA would need to secure instructors in advance of lesson registrations.

Recreational Hockey

There are nets and lights on the lake throughout the winter and the this ice depth is now thick enough to start maintaining the hockey rinks.

Starting Tuesday January 24th at 6pm the Mahogany Homeowners Association Volunteer Committee is encouraging residents to get out on the lake for a game of recreational hockey. We are hoping to have a game every Tuesday for the remainder of the skating Season.

Any questions can be emailed to sports@mahoganyhoa.com.

The West Beach Site skating program will continue as long as there are safe ice conditions. Two lake surface hockey rinks will be provided, as well as a pleasure skating track. The second smaller rink added this year is intended for families with younger children who wish to skate or play hockey without safety concerns of doing so on the larger hockey rink with the more experienced skaters and hockey players.  Please respect the intent of the smaller rink as well as the skating rules and refrain from using hockey sticks and pucks on the pleasure skating track.

Ice conditions are monitored on a weekly basis during winter months and once the ice surface is considered safe for skating, the green flag at the West Beach Site will be installed. If the red flag is raised during the winter, please respect it and all other thin ice signage, and remain off the ice for your own safety.

Learn to Skate Program (FREE)

When we get the GREEN Flag!

Your Sports and Programs HOA Committee is patiently waiting for the ice to be thick enough for skating.  Once we get the GREEN flag to show the ice is thick enough we can start skating on the lake this winter.

Youth Programs

Mahogany Social Committee has created a committee specific to youth ages 12-17 years of age.  The Youth Programs Committee is an opportunity for Mahogany youth to get involved in the community and have their voices heard.  Providing opportunities for youth in volunteerism, event planning/budgeting, role modelling and leadership has proven to keep crime rates and vandalism down, not to mention fun opportunities to meet new friends and gain valuable experience for their resumes.  Communities that invest in their youth are happy, healthy and strong.

The Youth Programs Committee will meet once a month to discuss personal interests, community action and volunteer opportunities. Time commitments may vary depending on the involvement level of the Youth Programs Committee in support of the Mahogany HOA.  We will always consider the youths’ extracurricular and family commitments when booking meetings and activities.  The Youth Programs Committee is a place of safety, respect and fun. Abuse will NOT be tolerated and will result in immediate dismissal from the Youth Programs Committee.

We would like to invite your son/daughter to get involved in building the community of Mahogany.  Please feel free to contact me at youthprograms@mahoganyhoa.com with any questions or concerns. I look forward to supporting your youth in building a youth friendly Mahogany.

We are currently looking for a male mentor to support the Youth Programs Committee.  http://www.mahoganyhoa.com/events-programs/volunteer-opportunities/
